Summary:
We developed this unit to meet a need that is oftentimes overlooked in schools today - the need for students to be taught about financial and physical health.
Students will participate in our ITU during both of our class periods. Students in Mr. Beals' classroom will choose to become experts on either strategies for getting out of debt or strategies for growing money through investments. The focus of both topics will be on teaching students the mathematics of how debt increases even if students are paying it off and how investments increase your money. Students in Mrs. McCarthy's class will choose to become experts on either nutrition or exercise. The focus of both topics will be on the science of how each subject contributes to health and proper physiological functioning.
After studying his or her chosen topic, each student will participate in a service learning project where they address social justice & equity, visual & performing arts, and cooperative learning components. To complete this project, students will work together design a presentation and create an art project. Student will choose which class they would like to create a presentation for and which class they would like to create an art project for. Each student will participate in both a presentation group and an art production group. Presentation and art production groups focused on the same "expert" topic will be paired together to plan a joint session they will perform for other classes at our school after first performing it for their classmates. In this way all students will learn about the topic they did not become experts on by observing and providing feedback for other groups and each group can polish their performances before performing for another class.
